                     THE WHO INDEX
Where else could I meet a hero and get paid for doing it other than IBC in the sixties. During the years I was there The Who were in and out over a period of six years and I was lucky enough to work with Pete Townshed and master some of their classics My disc cutting room was a floor below studio A, where all the sessions were done,
and I would only come into contact with Pete or Kit Lambert as if the others had done their job they were either on their way home or over "The Dover Castle". I worked on "Substitute", "I'm a Boy", "Pictures of Lilly", "A Quick One" and "The Who Sell Out" . Perhaps my favourite album that I ever worked on was "Live at Leeds" as I got to work on a one to one with the leader of the band. There were always various acetates to cut, sometimes the finished product and sometimes demos of songs that would later be known all around the world. Here then is my bit about a band that is still respected to this day by "proper geezers!" I have collected this information and cross checked but if something is wrong please forgive and if you have anything to add please get in touch.
It must be remembered that sometimes the band started recording at one place and maybe finish it up at another.  I have listed tracks that IBC have been involved with, although the majority were started and finished at number 35. On a personal note(get a web site and you can do this) I would have bent over backwards to appease the Who when they used IBC but unfortunately our management were from another generation and eventually they stopped coming to number 35 as they became mega big and now had a wider choice of all the new studios springing up with modern facilities. But IBC had them when they were raw and for me as a young man nothing could touch the sounds that were coming out of Studio A

MY GENERATION

1. "OUT IN THE STREET" Recorded April 12-14, 1965 at IBC Studios, One of Pete's earliest compositions, may have been recorded as early as March 11th, 1965 at IBC Studios.
2. "I DON'T MIND" April 12, 1965 IBC Studios   Old James Brown number
3. "THE GOOD'S GONE"
4. "LA-LA-LA LIES" October 12-13, 1965 IBC Studios
5. "MUCH TOO MUCH" October 12-13, 1965 IBC Studios
6. "MY GENERATION" Produced by Shel Talmy at IBC Studios, October 13, 1965. The band tried many attempts at this in various studios. RELEASED NOVEMBER 1965
7. "THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT" October November 16, 1965 IBC Studios.

8. "PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE" April 12, 1965 IBC Studios.
9. "IT'S NOT TRUE" October 12-13, 1965 IBC Studios
10. "I'M A MAN" April 12-14, 1965 at IBC Studios
11. "A LEGAL MATTER" April 12-14, 1965 at IBC Studios,
Produced by Shel Talmy at IBC Studios, London October 12, 1965. Piano by Nicky Hopkins.
I have found two dates for this track and I think it might have something to do with The Who and
producer Shel Talmy going their separate ways. Believe this was PTs first recorded lead vocal.

12. THE OX" October 12th 1965. The title came from John Entwistle's nickname

13. "CIRCLES" (aka: INSTANT PARTY) January 12-13, 1966 IBC Studios,
The first Who song recorded with brass performed by John Entwistle:
"Circles" is the last Who recording produced by Shel Talmy.

A QUICK ONE

1. "RUN RUN RUN" October 1966. IBC Studios
2. "BORIS THE SPIDER" November 1966 IBC Studios
3. "I NEED YOU"
4. "WHISKEY MAN" November 1966 IBC Studios
5. "HEATWAVE" April 12-14, 1965/ August 1966 IBC Studios
Apparently there were two versions of this Martha and The Vandellas hit,so I have listed both dates
6. "COBWEBS AND STRANGE"
7. "DON'T LOOK AWAY" November 1966 IBC Studios
8. "SEE MY WAY" November 1966 IBC Studios
9. "SO SAD ABOUT US" November 1966 IBC Studios.
The Jam covered this song in 1978.
10. "A QUICK ONE WHILE HE'S AWAY A Quick One, While He's Away/ autumn of 1966.
This was recorded in various studios around town. Much depended on the availability of a studio as it had to fit in with the band being on the road to pay for the sessions. Once again I would have personally given them anytime they wanted and and got rid of the orchestra session in studio A or any other session that was stopping me getting to hear the latest gem before any of my mates.
Pete's first rock opera contains six separate songs, 'Her Man's Gone', 'Crying Town', 'We Have A Remedy', 'Ivor The Engine Driver', 'Soon Be Home' and 'You Are Forgiven'.
I found this quote while searching the net researching for this site "The album's engineering produced a mushy sound that could not even be cured by the remastered CD release, and for reasons described above the songwriting is weak in comparison to the usual standard for Who albums". Obviously written by someone who was not there and has no idea that when you are recording the loudest band in the world you ride with the distortion. Kit use to stand by me making sure I got the loudest possible signal on the single and as they were in (Back to) mono this was possible. And as for the remarks about the songs,to us they were another treat from the boys from West London.

The Who Sell Out

Side 1:
1. "ARMENIA CITY IN THE SKY" Armenia City in the Sky October 20, 1967. [Written by Pete's former roommate and chauffeur John "Speedy" Keene. This was the only time that The Who used a song written specifically for them by a person outside the group. A year later Keene would be part of the Townshend-created group Thunderclap Newman.
2. "HEINZ BAKED BEANS"
3. "MARY-ANNE WITH THE SHAKY HAND"
4. "ODORONO" October 11, 1967. Odorono was a popular underarm deodorant, the first marketed specifically for women.
5. "TATTOO" October 12, 1967 IBC Studios, London)
6. "OUR LOVE WAS
7. "I CAN SEE FOR MILES"

Side 2:
8. "I CAN'T REACH YOU"
9. "MEDAC" (Entwistle)
10. "RELAX"
11. "SILAS STINGY" (Entwistle)
12. "SUNRISE" November 2, 1967. The last song recorded for The Who Sell Out.
13. "RAEL"
We spent ages trying to work out how to have the continuous "Track Records" loop in sync, which was resolved by Denis and Pete from the workshop sticking a bit a paper into a switch which allowed us to record on the lead out. After many practices we finally got it right
