I never saw The Stones at IBC as by the time I started working there they were super stars and their recordings were made all over the world. But back in March 1963 Mick,Charlie,Keith,Brian,Bill and Ian Stewart entered Studio A at number 35 and within months of recording five demos they were up there with the Beatles. Glyn Johns was an engineer at IBC and over the years I have heard many stories about these sessions. The main story was that Glyn went to George Clouston ( an ex violin session man who now owned the studio with band leader Eric Robinson) who was not interested in anything to do with electric music and so Glyn took the tapes t0 Decca and the rest is history. I don't know if money changed hands (which would decide who officially owns the tape) but I do know that nothing was signed as it was of no interest to someone who could not understand the music. I do know that years later George Clouston came into my disc cutting room with a couple of pin stripes from the city. As he nothing about what did it was left to me to try and explain what we did to to people not interested. Anyway during the conversation Clouston mentioned that he had let the Stones slip through his hands and I could not believe it when they all had a chortle at my boss's knowledge of the current trends. I was about 20 and I thought if I had made a cock up like that I don't think I would boast about it.
Anyway the session provide some of the great stuff that the Stones were performing at that time and Glyn stayed with them for many years. I am trying to find out who was the second engineer so watch this space.March 11, 1963 IBC STUDIOS, LONDON Engineer : Glyn Johns
