STATESIDE
RECORDS
|
The Stateside record label started in the UK in 1962. The labels colour was black with white writing and, the 'S' was written as an American dollar sign. It issued a large number of USA label's including ABC, Bell/Amy/Mala,Wand, Laurel and the Tamla/Gordy/Motown group which made it a good label for the mods to search through for new sounds coming out of the U.S.
The list of artists was very
impressive and included all the very early Tamla Motown acts, Marvin Gaye, Isley
Brothers, Mary Wells, The Miracles, The Contours, The Marvelettes, The Temptations,
Martha and the Vandellas and The Supremes, who gave the label it's first No
1 record with "Baby Love " in 1964.
There were many R
& B and blues tracks on the label from the likes of John Lee Hooker, Jimmy
Reed, Jimmy Witherspoon, and Slim Harpo. There was also great records Lee Dorsey
including "Get Out Of My Life Women", "Ride Your Pony",
"Holy Cow", and Working In A Coal Mine" and classics such as"Open
The Door To Your Heart" by Darrell Banks and Gene Chandler's "Nothing
Can Stop Me"
In the period from 1964 up till
late 1966 Stateside was one of the best labels releasing dance music and the
company continued up to April 1974. Check out the Stateside label singles by
