ISLAND RECORDS

If you associate an obscure record Label with the mods then it has to be the SUE label which was part of ISLAND records.
Chris Blackwell founded ISLAND records in Jamaica in 1959. and the majority of his early releases were by west indians and only sold locally to the Island. Blackwell saw that their was a big Jamaican community in London and in 1962 he moved there and opened offices in Nottinghill Gate.
The Jamaicans and the mods shared a love of dancing and soon the white boys of London were rocking to the Jamaican sound. Clubs like
The Last Chance, The Scene, The Flamingo, The Whiskey A GoGo and the Roaring Twenties in Carnaby Street catered to a mixed clientele and the white and black kids met to dance away the night. The company also started SUE Records which became one of the most sought after labels for the DJs who worked those clubs.
Some of the best, and most rare mod records were released on SUE and if you click on the button below you will see a list of those releases
