CARNABY STREET AND THE MYTH OF SWINGING LONDON

If there one thing about Carnaby Street that I hate it is the Myth that it was the fashion centre of the Mod Culture. Unlike The Kings Road and the birth of Punk, Carnaby Street in the early sixties was more well known for a club called the Roaring 20's than a place that mods got their clobber (clothes).
The same goes with the myth of swinging London and by the time that Roger Miller sang about England swinging the Mods had left town and were ready to grow their hair long.
With visitors from America and Europe filling the town the traders moved in and the union jack was taken off the parkas. Swinging London was everywhere and the places like the Scene and The Last Chance lost their appeal as discotheques sprung up all over the city. The working class youth were now turned away as pop stars and the trendy drank their scotch and coke under flashing lights
